Service/Adaptation Engineer (car mechanic qualifications)

Engineer working on a car adaptationWe are looking for a Service/Adaptations Engineer (or Trainee Engineer) to work on a range of mobility products including mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs.  There will also be the opportunity to work on specialist vehicle adaptations after training.

The role is based in our Inverness Workshop but will eventually involve travel across the Highlands and Islands; Moray and Grampian working in client homes & residential care homes; therefore, a Disclosure Scotland check will be required. 

We’d be very surprised if you have all the knowledge and skills you need on day one given the specialised nature of the role, but we are looking for someone that has the basic mechanical/electrical skills necessary to grow into the job. Level 2 NVQ would be a requirement in this discipline.

Hours: A minimum of 37.5 hours per week.  Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm, with a ½ hour unpaid lunch break.  You must be at work prepared to begin at 9am.  

Salary: Negotiable – depending on experience and final contracted hours. c.£25,954 to £31,500

A trainee would be considered, providing the applicant has a definite aptitude for repairs and at least a NVQ Level 1. 

Training will be given including specialist training to work on electric vehicles. 

Job Description 

Your duties will include: 

  • all aspects of servicing and repairs to (mainly, but not limited to) mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs;

  • attending customers’ premises, normally in a home environment, with a full range of tools and equipment to locate the fault and replace or repair the faulty items, ensuring the equipment is working to the customer’s requirements; 

  • face to face and telephone customer service; 

  • telephone communication with clients, potential clients and suppliers;

  • admin duties by both computer and paper methods;

  • installation of various vehicle mechanical and electrical adaptations in our workshop and off-site; 

  • diagnosing and repairing faults; 

  • demonstrating equipment/adaptations to customers after repair/installation; 

  • provide holiday cover for our Vehicle Adaptation Advisor; 

  • stock control. 

Person Specification

Applicants must: 

  • Have Level 2 NVQ in motor engineering (trainees must have level 1.) 

  • Have experience in, or an aptitude for, mechanical or electrical engineering;

  • Be of a very calm, caring and patient nature suited to dealing with a specialised and vulnerable customer base; 

  • Be willing to listen and learn.  Extremely good clear spoken and written English are vital; 

  • Be in possession of a full clean driving licence, preferably with experience in driving larger vehicles as safe and responsible use of our company vans would be involved;

  • Be organised and self-motivated with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment;

  • Have good communication skills; 

  • Understand the importance of health and safety; 

  • Have basic IT knowledge, for duties such as using email, online ordering, online contact with customers and suppliers, stock control, simple database input etc.
